Opportunities for Success

Britney Brown

Class of 2018

“I began my Cerro Coso journey at the age of 13. Thanks to the concurrent enrollment program and support from my family, mentors, and professors, I finished high school less than three years later while taking advanced college courses such as the Calculus series, Mechanical and Electromagnetic Physics.

“Outside of class, I was also involved in various clubs and societies. From 2016-18, I was president of the STEMtations, a club that encouraged and enriched student understanding of STEM-related topics. I was also a member of Phi Theta Kappa and through this society, I received the Coca-Cola Leader of Promise Scholarship in 2016 and was even awarded a position on the All-California Academic, Team 1 for 2018. Through the Honors Program, I was involved in many interesting research projects and even presented my research on “The Impacts of Invalid Assumption on Life Data Analysis” at the Honors Transfer Council Undergraduate Research Conference in 2018, receiving an Exemplary Achievement Award and having a summary of my presentation published in Building Bridges: The Selected Abstracts of the HTCC Undergraduate Student Research Conference, 2018.

“In the spring of 2018, I graduated with six associate degrees: Engineering AS, Computer Science AS, Mathematics AS, and Liberal Arts in Math & Science AA, Social & Behavioral Sciences AA, and Arts & Humanities AA. A lot of people ask me how I got so many degrees by the age of 17, and my answer is always the same: have a plan. Every counselor, faculty, and professor at Cerro Coso will help you reach your goals, but you have to take the first step. Imagine your dream job and create an educational work plan that will get you there. Cerro Coso will provide many opportunities for success… jump on every single one of them.

“I transferred to the University of California, Los Angeles in the fall of 2018 and two years later, I received my Bachelor’s in Statistics and was even one of the undergraduate speakers at my commencement. Now, at the age of 19, I am currently continuing my education at UCLA in the Masters of Applied Statistics program hoping to pursue a career in data science/machine learning and education.

“At the start of my Cerro Coso career I never imagined myself where I am today. All I knew was that if I put all my effort into my community college education, I would have the foundation to do something great.

"That foundation, and all the wonderful classes, opportunities, and scholarships Cerro Coso has to offer, have carved a path for my success, and I am forever grateful!”
