1986 Cerro Coso Graduate
Betty Spindler, a 1986 graduate of Cerro Coso and local ceramic artist, really likes her fruits and vegetables. Known for the vibrant colors she instills into her ceramic fruits, vegetables, and other food items, Betty sculptures everyday life. There is an element of fun that shines through her pieces, which look good enough to eat. Her ceramic pieces appear in galleries throughout the Unites States and have been selected to be part of several museum collections including the Smithsonian, American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. and the Crocker Museum in Sacramento. Her works have been shown at the L.A. County Museum, UCLA Hammer Museum, Orange County Museum, Monterey Museum of Art, Palm Springs Art Museum, and is in private collections internationally.
Betty's story of triumph over a learning disability which led her to a successful and rewarding life is an inspiration for all Cerro Coso graduates. She began taking art classes at Cerro Coso with Paul Meyers in the 80's. "I really appreciate the great foundation I received at Cerro Coso. The classes were every bit as difficult as those at the university level," she said. With a lot of hard work, she turned her hobby into a career. She has succeeded so well that one of her ceramic hot dogs is on permanent display at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C.
Betty holds an Associate of Arts degree in Arts from Cerro Coso, with distinction. She served as Student Trustee on the Kern Community College District Board of Trustees for one year, and a Student Trustee on the California Association of Community Colleges for two years. Betty was also appointed by the Governor to the Commission for Disabled Students for one year and was selected as the Cerro Coso Community College Distinguished Alumni Speaker in 2012. She also holds a Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts with a major in Art from the University of California Santa Cruz.
