Chance English, a student at Cerro Coso Community College, has been named a 2019 Coca-Cola Academic Team Gold Scholar and will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 Gold, 50 Silver, and 50 Bronze Scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Each scholar also receives a commemorative medallion.
“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, President of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa and make it possible for deserving students to achieve their educational goals.”
Students are nominated for the academic team by their college administrators. Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership, and engagement in college and community service.
Coca-Cola Academic Team members were recognized in both local and statewide ceremonies and internationally during Phi Theta Kappa's annual convention, PTK Catalyst, April 4-6 in Orlando, Florida.
Chance English of Boron aspires to operate his own multimedia business. He will graduate this May with six associate degrees from Cerro Coso: Business Administration AS-T, Computer Information Systems AS, Liberal Arts: Arts and Humanities AA, Liberal Arts: Math and Science AA, Liberal Arts: Social and Behavioral Sciences AA, and Mathematics AS-T. English took most of his classes online, but also took classes at the Ridgecrest and East Kern campuses. He has applied and been accepted at the following six four-year universities next fall: California Lutheran University, University of Redlands, California Baptist University, UC Irvine, Grand Canyon University, and CSU Bakersfield, and plans to decide in early May which college he will attend. In addition to being named the Coca-Cola Academic Team Gold Scholar, English reached Eagle Scout Rank in 2014, 2019 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Academic 1st Team, 2014 Awana Citation Award, 2014 Antelope Valley Press Future Leader, Cerro Coso Community College President's Outstanding Academic Achievement Award for 2016-2019, Cerro Coso Community College President's List 2014-2019, Soaring High Award (NASA Robotics 2008), and National Merit Scholar Finalist 2013.
